Queensland Marine Training Services was formed in March 2003 in response to an increasing number of requests to conduct specific maritime related training. In January 2006 we began to focus on the delivery of commercial courses including Elements of Shipboard Safety, Coxswain, Master 5, Master 4 and Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 and have built a number of partnerships with the maritime industry to facilitate training activities.

Queensland Marine Training Services is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) - Provider number 31826.

Included in our scope of registration are the following courses:

  • TDM10107 Certificate I in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operations) includes Elements of Shipboard Safety
  • TDM20207 Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving - Grade 3)
  • TDM20307 Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain)
  • TDM30407 Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Master Class 5)
  • TDM40307 Certificate IV in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Master Class 4)

Our training programme enables students to progress through commercial competencies utilising the most modern and adaptable set of assessment instruments available. All our commercial training is undertaken within a competency based approach revolving around underpinning knowledge workshops and practical on-water training and assessment activities. All our commercial courses utilise the Maritime Safety Queensland approved assessment instruments and industry based task books.

Queensland Marine Training Services has been given Yachting Australia Recognised Teaching Establishment status.

All our courses are conducted in strict accordance with the guidelines laid down by AQTF, DETA, Yachting Australia or the Office of Maritime Communication (Marine Radio).

Queensland Marine Training Services offers a number of options to obtain the necessary qualifications required to work in the commercial maritime industry.

THE FIRST STEP

Prior to seeking employment students are encouraged to attend the Elements of Shipboard Safety course. This three day course provides an introduction to the maritime industry with particular focus on sea safety, fire-fighting and OH&S at sea.

For students looking to obtain a Coxswain or Master’s certificate we offer the following options (Stream C – Coxswains only):

STREAM A

WHO: Students who are already working in the maritime industry for a minimum of twelve months and have some or all of the qualifying sea-time required assessed by Maritime Safety Queensland.

1.            Obtain an Industry Task Book and assignment booklet from Queensland Marine Training Services;

2.            Work through the task book and assignments, submitting both;

3.            Attend workshops that are identified for you to complete;

4.            During the workshops you will be provided with the written and practical assessments required to complete your qualification.

STREAM B

WHO: Students who are employed within the maritime industry and who have not had their seatime assessed by Maritime Safety Queensland.

1.            Obtain an Industry Task Book from Queensland Marine Training Services;

2.            Substantially complete the task book whilst working; we will monitor your progress during this period.

3.            Obtain the assignment pack from Queensland Marine Training Services;

4.            Substantially complete the assignments prior to attending a block of workshops conducted by Queensland Marine Training Services;

5.            During the workshops you will be provided the written and practical assessments required to complete your qualification.

STREAM C

WHO: This stream is for students who are currently not employed within the maritime industry and who are looking at getting employment within the industry.

1.            Attend a four week workshop block to obtain the necessary underpinning knowledge;

2.            On completion of the block you will be issued an Industry Task Book and Assignment package to complete in the industry - Queensland Marine Training Services will monitor your progress;

3.            Complete and submit the assignments and substantially complete the task book prior to  booking  for written assessments and final practical assessments with Queensland Marine Training Services.

For students in Stream C that do not have an industry placement, Queensland Marine Training Services will assist  training onboard an approved training vessel *
